Reconstruction boundary
A model can continue a wall texture across a small scratch by reading the wall on both sides. It cannot know the face hidden behind a large tear. The generated face may fit the period and family resemblance, yet it remains a new construction. No old image restoration prompt can turn that construction into recovered evidence.
Use masks or selections when the editor supports them. Repair dust first, then scratches, then tone. Review after each pass. This limits the area the model can reinterpret and makes it easier to identify when a successful cleanup has started to alter the person or scene.

Use the cleanest, highest-resolution scan available with the entire border visible. Avoid screenshots, filters, aggressive phone sharpening, and repeated JPEG saves. Save an untouched master before cropping, color correction, dust removal, or AI repair.
Inspect before editing
